Health Risk Assessment To Examine The Impact Of Emissions From Tunnels On A Nearby Population
Our Challenge
  • We conducted a health risk assessment to examine the impact of portal emissions on the health of individuals residing near tunnel portals, most tunnels adjust emissions using fans based on in-tunnel pollutant concentrations.
Our Approach
  • We evaluated approximately 50 studies conducted at more than 35 different international traffic tunnels
    • Special emphasis was given to carcinogenic chemicals and those associated with cardiovascular and pulmonary health effects
    • 38 chemicals were identified for evaluation
  • Several scenarios were evaluated and doses for local child and adult were calculated, and cancer and non-cancer risks were estimated.
Our Findings
  • In general, most tunnel environments were found to be safe for commuters, tunnel workers, and nearby residents exposed to pollutants for short periods. Primary adverse effect is irritation.
  • Emissions from tunnels studied in the risk assessment were not expected to increase the risk of chronic health effects in the surrounding community.
