Trans-dermal aluminum exposures
Our Challenge
  • A new trans-dermal insulin delivery system was developed and concern over small amounts of Al-containing particles could penetrate the skin with each use.
  • Questions were raised about cumulative Al loading that might occur with multiple daily dosing and whether this places people at higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Our Approach
  • Based on results of extraction studies, we developed estimates of aluminum dose for different doses.
  • Compared those doses with those associated with exposures to other consumer products.
Our Findings
  • Body burdens of aluminum from a lifetime of daily multiple injections would not exceed typical background concentrations.
  • There was no risk of aluminum-related health effects from the device.
