Silica Exposure during Abrasive Blasting Operations
Our Challenge
  • We were retained to conduct a State-of-the-Science review of exposures to silica in abrasive blasting operations and the associated respiratory protection requirements over time.
Our Approach
  • Collected and evaluated literature from 1900 up through the present day related to
    • Health effects of exposure to silica
    • History of regulatory requirements and guidelines for silica
    • Silica exposures while abrasive blasting
    • Technological history of related personal protective equipment
Our Findings
  • Developed an understanding of “State of the Art” regarding the evolution in the knowledge of hazards of silica (in general), as well, as abrasive blasting regulations and personal protective equipment requirements over time
  • Our assessment influenced court decisions in several states
