Inhalational Exposure to Hexavalent Chromium in Schools
Our Challenge
  • We were retained to assess potential exposure of students and workers near cooling towers to chromium VI (Cr6+) and Nickel in mist
Our Approach
  • We estimatd on-campus exposures and students’ potential doses of Cr VI based on:
    • Mist emission rates from towers
    • Rates of dispersion were estimated based on a tracer experiment conducted on the school campus
    • Evaluated numerous hypothetical scenarios based on activities of typical high school students and athletes
Our Findings
  • Any Cr VI exposures were unlikely have exceeded background exposures experienced by the general population
  • Cancer risks associated with inhalation of Cr VI were below 10-5 (which was the decision-making criterion)
