Exposure Assessment Under (REACH) Community Regulation
Our Challenge
  • ChemRisk was retained to perform occupational and environmental exposure modeling for eight substances being registered under the EU Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical regulation (REACH) prior to the first registration deadline in December 2010.
Our Approach
  • We relied on a number of modeling tools and strategies to efficiently complete the required assessments for the environment and human health, including the service life of consumer products.
    • Developed novel exposure assessment approaches including environmental assessments of hydrolysis products for substances that have very short half-lives in water.
    • Modeled predicted environmental concentration (PECs) and worker exposure using the European Union System for the Evaluation of Substances (EUSES) model, the ECETOC Target Risk Assessment (TRA) model and the Chesar (Chemical Safety Assessment and Reporting) tool.
Our Findings
  • Sensitivity analyses of exposure can often alter the characterization of the entire risk profile.
  • Consideration of downstream user (DU) guidance and trade association interaction essential for efficient completion of REACH exposure assessments.
