Assessing Risks of Golf Course Chemicals
Our Challenge
- We were retained to evaluate the health hazard and environmental impacts of pesticide and fertilizer application on golf courses in the midwestern states.
Our Approach
- We assessed the method of application, frequency, and duration of use of pesticides and fertilizers, particularly 2, 4-D & Chlorothalonil.
- Evaluated the chemical exposure to residents living in the vicinity of golf courses through ingestion, inhalation and dermal routes
- Examined dermal, inhalational and oral route of exposure for workers applying chemicals .
- Evaluated Potential ecological damage to water, soil, air and fauna.
Our Findings
- Due to the variety of chemical used, the human health hazard depends on the proper use of PPE (glasses, gloves, coveralls & respirators), technique and condition of equipment.
- Environmental harm can be greatly reduced through “less is better” approach and considering the time of day during application.
