Exposure-Assessment

Exposure assessment is the quantitative evaluation of the various possible routes by which foreign chemicals can enter the body and the measurement of the magnitude of the internally absorbed doses. The backbone of an exceptional risk assessment or epidemiologic study is a high-quality exposure assessment. Our scientists are recognized as pioneers in the field, having published nearly 150 peer-reviewed papers on this topic. To reflect the uncertainties and variability associated with inputs and assumptions, comprehensive exposure assessments often utilize Monte Carlo techniques, as well as other methodologies that have gained broad acceptance in the United States and abroad.

Over the years, ChemRisk® scientists have estimated the exposures of literally thousands of individuals to aerial, water, dust, and other emissions in dozens of occupational and residential settings. We were the first to popularize the field of historical dose reconstruction by conducting and publishing work practice studies at a variety of domestic manufacturing and service facilities, including at national nuclear test laboratories, where radioactive materials have been routinely handled.
