Exposure of Hospital Workers to Ethylene Oxide (EO)
Our Challenge
- We were retained to determine the historical potential health risks to hospital workers coming into close contact with EO sterilizers, aerators, and chemical disinfectants used as bactericides within the healthcare system.
Our Approach
- Characterized the anticipated exposure levels, chemical toxicology, supplier and facility documentation, and current design of standard safeguards built in to sterilize to assess accidental EO release dangers.
Our Findings
- We concluded that use of EO and chemical disinfectants at this facility did not contribute or directly cause any illness alleged by the hospital workers.
- Pre-existing safeguards were deemed effective in eliminating or minimizing exposure and adverse health effects during both routine and non-routine operations.
